A joint research team led by Professor Mu In-hee and Professor Lee Dong-young of Seoul National University's Medical School, together with beta amyloid, developed a way to predict brain buildup of tau protein, which is considered to be a cause of Alzheimer's disease, and published a cover paper on the international journal Brain 21st.

Alzheimer's accounts for 50 to 70 percent of the causes of dementia, and early diagnosis is more important than anything else because it is difficult to treat fundamental problems after brain cell damage is developed. In many cases, they are conducting early tests to check whether protein due to Alzheimer's disease is accumulated in the brain by using PET technology, but the cost is too high for patients.

The research team conducted an experiment based on the belief that the level of tau protein present in the blood is closely related to the accumulation of tau protein in the brain. The research team studied 52 people with normal cognitive skills, nine people with hardness cognitive impairment, and a total of 76 people with Alzheimer's disease.

The researchers found that the beta-amyloid ratio, which is well known as another cause of Alzheimer's disease, is not only closely related to the amount of Tau protein in the brain but also to the process of Alzheimer's at the anatomical level.

The researchers also found that the amount of tau protein in the blood is very significant depending on whether or not the substance is accumulated in the brain. In fact, it succeeded in predicting the accumulation of rain in the brain at a sensitivity of 80 percent depending on the level of thau protein in the blood.
"By making this research practical, we will contribute to preventing dementia and inhibiting the progress of dementia," Professor Muk In-hee said. "By further research, we will be able to find additional indicators related to dementia and use beta amyloid prediction technology together, thus increasing the accuracy of the prediction of dementia prediction."
